"Private" events

Making an event "private" prevents it from showing on the public version of a timeline. That means that others cannot see it, comment on it, or anything. Not even the event title shows.

We worry about safety concerns

IS there a way to keep an entire timeline private? Can we avoid seeing others' timelines (with who-knows-what as content) from links at the bottom of the page?

Also, there is the ability to COMMENT on other's timelines. That may bring in contact from those not part of the greater school community.

Any user on circaVie can search or browse the timelines created by others. The search looks at every word that has been entered as part of any event (presumably NOT private ones).

Therefore, the safest way for students to create a timeline is to enter no tags and avoid any identifiable info in the text or images. If the content is curricular, not personal, this will avoid problems.

Here are some thoughts for using circavie: have students make timelines that show the life cycle of a volcano, the water cycle, or the life of a famous scientist or author. Have them create a timeline of the plot of a novel, interspersed with the ways themes appear throughout the novel. If you read Dickens, be SURE to create a timeline of some of the many characters, such as Estella in Great Expectations! If you teach chemistry, have students create illustrated sequences explaining oxidation or reduction ( or both). Embed the results in your class wiki or blog for feedback and sharing or share by URL from the link on Circavie. Younger students can create personal timelines, but there is the danger of "outsiders" seeing them. Make sure you make the events private and limit any identifiable info online. Students can use a single teacher log-in OR Gmail subaccounts from the teacher's Gmail to make OpenID accounts and avoid having to use student email addresses or IM screennames (usually prohibited in schools).
