Rock of the Westies

Rock of the Westies is the tenth studio album by British singer/songwriter Elton John, released in 1975 (see 1975 in music).

Like Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy, Rock of the Westies also debuted on the United States Billboard charts at #1, the only two albums at that time to have done so. It was less successful in the artist's home territory of the United Kingdom, where it only reached #5. Rock of the Westies also contained the U.S. #1 (but only #14 in the UK) single, "Island Girl," which was released prior to the full album coming out. Elton John noted at the time in a radio interview that he had wanted to release "Dan Dare (Pilot of the Future)" as the album's first single instead of "Island Girl," because he thought it had more commercial potential. He was however, overruled, and "Dan Dare" was never released as a single, and "Island Girl" of course became a huge hit.

Captain Fantastic is a concept album that gives an autobiographical look at the struggles John (Captain Fantastic) and lyricist Bernie Taupin (the Brown Dirt Cowboy) had in the early years of their musical careers in London (from 1967 to 1969). The lyrics and accompanying photo booklet are infused with a specific sense of place and time that would otherwise be rare in John's music.

Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player

This was Elton's commercial breakthrough in America and yielded his first #1 single there - "Crocodile Rock." Along with "Crocodile Rock" Don't Shoot Me... contained more songs with a pop flavor, including "Elderberry Wine" (the b-side of "Crocodile Rock") and "Teacher, I Need You." Many long-time fans however, lamented this change, wishing he had stayed true to his original roots of simple piano ballads which were the staple on most of his earlier albums.

Elton John is the artist's eponymous second album.

Because Empty Sky didn't see an American release until 1975, this record was many people's first exposure to his music. Compared to the ambitious Empty Sky, the follow-up features the catchy melodies and intelligent lyrics that John and lyricist Bernie Taupin became known for. Prime among these was "Your Song", which became one of their signature efforts.
