Eryngium (Sea Holly) German name = Man's fidelity. clutched in his hand - an allusion to marriage: aphrodisiac. Married to Agnes Frey the next year. Also fidelity to God - hence the inscription.

Originally on vellum - easier to transport back to  Nuremberg from his travels.
